Ballerinas first danced en pointe at the beggining of the 19th century. it made the dancers appear weightless and fragile and became an important and admired quality of the romantic ballets! the first pointe shoes were not very supportive and many dancers had damaged feet. if you go onto the pointe video (press the button to the left of the screen) you can see how pointe shoes have developed over time!
